In Syria, following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, access was gained to Saydnaya Prison, an alleged center for torture and execution.

Located just 15 kilometers north of Damascus, a detention center built in 1987 has been exposed as a hub of atrocities under Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Known for unimaginable physical and psychological torture, it served to silence political opponents, journalists, and human rights activists.
From 2011 to 2015, over 13,000 people were executed here after sham trials lasting mere minutes. Weekly mass hangings, with up to 50 prisoners killed at a time, highlighted the site’s inhumanity. Survivors describe it as a place designed not only to kill but to completely strip victims of their humanity.
Recently liberated, the site’s underground cells and hidden horrors are now being revealed. Families of the disappeared often received no confirmation of deaths, leaving many in anguished uncertainty.
