Tensions escalate between Colombia and the United States over deportation flights

U.S. President Donald Trump announced the imposition of a 25% tariff on all Colombian products following President Gustavo Petro’s refusal to receive two repatriation flights carrying deported migrants.

In a significant diplomatic development, Colombian President Gustavo Petro has blocked two U.S. military flights carrying deported Colombian migrants, citing concerns over the treatment of deportees. President Petro emphasized the need for dignified and respectful treatment of migrants, rejecting their criminalization.

In response, U.S. President Donald Trump announced immediate retaliatory measures against Colombia. These include a 25% tariff on Colombian goods, escalating to 50% within a week, a travel ban on Colombian officials, and additional sanctions targeting individuals associated with the Colombian government.

The dispute highlights broader tensions over immigration policies and the treatment of deported migrants. President Petro has previously criticized U.S. deportation practices, referring to the forced expulsion of migrants as a «new form of slavery.»

This diplomatic standoff underscores the complexities of international cooperation on immigration issues and the challenges in balancing national interests with humanitarian considerations.
