Preliminary projections show victories in 19 of the 50 states, with Donald Trump leading the results.
As early results come in for the U.S. presidential election, the nation watches closely to see who will replace Joe Biden. The race presents two pivotal possibilities: a return to the White House for Donald Trump or a historic milestone with Kamala Harris potentially becoming the first female president.
Preliminary projections reveal predictable outcomes in several reliably partisan states. Trump has secured wins in a lineup of traditional Republican states, including Texas (40 electoral votes), Florida (30), Indiana (11), Kentucky (8), West Virginia (4), South Carolina (9), Oklahoma (7), Missouri (10), Tennessee (11), Alabama (9), Arkansas (6), along with the three electoral votes from each of the less populated states of South Dakota, North Dakota, and Wyoming. These victories establish a strong base of electoral votes for the Republican candidate early on.
Kamala Harris, meanwhile, has claimed Vermont (3 electoral votes), Maryland (10), Washington, D.C. (3), and Massachusetts (11), solidifying expected Democratic support. Nonetheless, the early results so far do not clarify which candidate may be leading in the highly contested battleground states.
Florida’s voting behavior has attracted particular attention this year. Since Democrat Barack Obama’s 2012 victory, Florida has shown a consistent trend toward Republicans, now affirming its role as a GOP stronghold rather than the traditional swing state it once was. Additionally, Trump holds a slight lead in Osceola County—home to Orlando and a significant Puerto Rican population—a traditionally Democratic area where Biden had a 14-point lead in 2020.
In Miami, a region typically favorable to Democrats, Trump also shows an early advantage, which may signal a shift in preferences among segments of the Hispanic electorate, a key demographic in South Florida.
As vote counts continue, both Trump and Harris supporters are watching closely, awaiting the full results to determine if Trump will regain the presidency or if Harris will break historical barriers in the White House.
